Ryan’s Thoughts: It’s classified as a medium roast, and that’s how it should be brewed. The flavors are subtle and get lost if this is brewed as a stronger blend. We overdid it a bit on the first batch, and I thought I was going to be sorely disappointed. We gave it a second go, however, and the honey and powdered sugar came through alongside the flavor from the beans themselves to create quite a wonderful morning blend. It went perfectly alongside the beignets we had made up, and I have to say I am very pleased with this coffee. I don’t usually like other things mixed into my coffee, as I believe that a blend should stand on its own before one tries to doctor it up, and while this one is great with a bit of cream, it really is quite pleasant straight from the pot, and I really appreciate that fact.
Krista’s Thoughts: This medium-roasted flavored coffee aims to capture my favorite treat from the Big Easy: beignets! With notes of honey and a hint of powdered sugar, the coffee seeks to replicate the delightful sweetness and texture of these wonderful and iconic pastries. However, while the first sip delivers a smooth texture, the flavors are a bit of a mixed bag for me. The honey provides a subtle sweetness, but can sometimes overshadow the lighter powdered sugar flavor, which is so delicate that it’s easy to miss altogether. To get the best results, I quickly discovered that it’s crucial to get your brewing measurements just right; an imbalance can lead to a honey flavor that feels overpowering rather than complementary and throws off the entire brew. Though I enjoy my coffee in various ways, I found that this is one I do prefer as a café au lait – especially if my brew isn’t right! I’m a big fan of going down to Café du Monde whenever I’m visiting the city, where I can enjoy warm beignets with a café au lait, and, while this coffee attempts to evoke that experience, it doesn’t quite hit the mark.
If you’re a fan of New Orleans, Princess and the Frog, or just delicious coffee, this beignet-inspired brew might just be your next favorite pick. With a smooth honey sweetness and a touch of powdered sugar, it aims to transport you straight to the heart of the bayou. While it might not fully capture the magic of enjoying beignets in the city, it’s still a fun nod to the iconic New Orleans treat. Have you tried this coffee yet? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—do you think it brings the flavors of the Big Easy to life, or does it miss the mark? We’d love to hear your take!
